PREVALENCE OF IRON DEPLETION IN STORED BLOOD

چکیده
It is the usual practice to bleed donors and store their blood for transfusion purposes. Theaim of this work evaluate depletion serum iron levels in stored blood. Onehundred samples were collected from at University Benin Teachinghospital analyzed levels, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume andblood morphology using standard methods day 0 (controls) 15 30.The mean ?SEM iron, 17.7 ? 1.01 ?mol/L, 12.9 0.71g/land 39.0 11.20% which served as controls. Storage iron depletion in male blood donors: its significance for iron status in women.
Among 24 male blood donors without anaemia who had been giving a mean of 2.2 donations per year involving a mean blood loss of about 900 ml a year, 10 (41%) were found to be depleted of storage iron. This is somewhat higher but similar to the previously recorded findings in healthy women without anaemia. The results may well support a policy of limiting blood donation to twice a year in men and...

Zheng et al 1 report that volunteer blood donors with a high donation frequency have significantly greater flow-mediated dilation than low frequency donors. Iron status among the frequent donors approximated a state of iron depletion by assessment of conventional iron markers. The study provides important support for the “iron hypothesis,” which suggests a protective effect of iron depletion, i...

An Invalid Test of the Iron Hypothesis To the Editor: Ascherio et al1 saw no association of blood donation with myocardial infarction or fatal coronary heart disease (CHD) in men and concluded that this is “strong evidence against the hypothesis that iron depletion reduces coronary risk.” This conclusion is not supported by their findings. Iron depletion was only achieved in a handful of men. A...

INTRODUCTION The ultimate aim in transfusing blood is the maintenance or restoration of a medium for the transport of oxygen to body tissues. Most often, the efficacy of transfusion therapy is evaluated by survival of the donor erythrocytes in the recipient. However, red cells may have a normal in vivo survival yet be unable to bind and unload oxygen physiologically. In 1956, Valtis and Kennedy...
متن کاملIron accelerates hemoglobin oxidation increasing mortality in vascular diseased guinea pigs following transfusion of stored blood.
Non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) and free hemoglobin (Hb) accumulate in circulation following stored RBC transfusions. This study investigated transfusion, vascular disease, and mortality in guinea pigs after stored RBC transfusion alone and following cotransfusion with apo-transferrin (apo-Tf) and haptoglobin (Hp). The effects of RBC exchange transfusion dose (1, 3, and 9 units), storage peri...
